Completed I am Proud to Be an American,
a patriotic look in photographs with text - at the diversity of peoples and the values which give the United States its’ strength.
I am Proud to Be an American is a series of photographs of immigrant and native born children wearing flags and other patriotic symbols. The elementary school children at Clinton Elementary School in Lincoin, Nebraska tell us what America means to them.
After 9/11, I felt a need to do a photographic project that re-affirms the values (democracy, freedom, diversity, opportunity) that make America unique. Our country is still a beacon to the world. (“Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses, yearning to be free...”). The immigration surge of the past decade has created a truly diverse population. It is my belief this will be our greatest strength in the 21st Century.
